This focus of the workshop will be to equip students with a solid approach to painting “alla prima” oils. This term refers to doing a painting wet-on-wet, in one sitting , in order to ensure the paint remains wet and workable throughout the painting process.
This is a form of direct painting, which is the most straight forward way to apply paint, and it is a very satisfying .
Oil paints are amazing to work with in this fashion; however, there are a few pitfalls for the unwary. I will demonstrate how to keep the colors fresh and clean to avoid the muddy result the wet-on-wet oils sometimes can produce, and how to avoid the other problems that can present while working in this method. We will discuss supports, brushes, mediums, solvents...everything you need to know to get a good start in wet-on-wet oil painting.
Color mixing and paint application will be emphasized during the workshop. The structure of this beginner/intermediate class will be that of students painting along with the instructor on a reference provided for their first painting and then students will have the choice of painting from their own reference for the second painting. This will avoid confusion and allow us to get straight to pushing the paint around.
Whether you are new to oils, or just wanting more experience in alla prima painting techniques, this course will be equally valuable.
See you there!
