MICHAEL KING - Advanced Colour Mixing

This is not your standard colour theory class. The aim of the course is to develop direct and practical ways of working with colour and thinking about colour and colour mixing.

Discover how to mix any colour you want by understanding the essential principles of paint pigments, value, temperature & chroma, while learning how to use the paint’s pigment bias to your advantage. This information is key to successful colour mixing and painting with more life and energy

At the end of the workshop you should be able to take away these experiences and apply them freely and with confidence in your own work.

    What you will gain

    • A fresh viewpoint on colour
    • Ability to mix colour confidently
    • A process to ensure you mix what you want
    • Realize the colour you need isn’t always the same as the colour you see
    • Learn to mix the colour you need the first time

    Topics covered

    • Understanding pigments value, temperature, chroma and bias
    • How to shift colour in the direction you need
    • What paints you want on your palette depending on your style
    • And we will finish with a discussion on why matching colour does not matter

    Beginner to Intermediate Acrylic painter

Lets construct a large 12x36 painting together from start to finish of a wilderness night scene. At the end of the weekend you will take home your own version of this painting created on a 12x36 canvas. The painting will feature a starry sky, the warm glow of a campfire or lantern light "falling off” under the canopy of trees surrounded by darkness. This acrylic painting workshop will cover many fundamental skills of acrylic painting that will form a foundation for you to apply to your painting practice. The best way to grasp the skills of painting is to paint something from start to finish. Working from the extremes of dark to light will give you the ultimate grasp of "painting the light". This is a hands on workshop, watch then do. Lets take your canvas from white to wonderful!

    We’ll cover:

    • Planning the painting, how to contain the scene
    • Preparing the 2” gallery wrap canvas for a dark scene, gesso techniques.

GAYE ADAMS - Painting Oils, Fast and Fresh

Instructor: Gaye Adams, SFCA, MPAC, AFC

Instructor: Gaye Adams, SFCA, MPAC, AFC

This focus of the workshop will be to equip students with a solid approach to painting “alla prima” oils.  This term refers to doing a painting wet-on-wet, in one sitting ,  in order to ensure the paint remains wet and workable throughout the painting process.

This is a form of direct painting, which is the most straight forward way to apply paint, and it is a very satisfying .

Oil paints are amazing to work with in this fashion; however, there are a few pitfalls for the unwary. I will demonstrate how to keep the colors fresh and clean to avoid the muddy result the wet-on-wet oils sometimes can produce, and how to avoid the other problems that can present while working in this method.  We will discuss supports, brushes, mediums, solvents...everything you need to know to get a good start in wet-on-wet oil painting.

Color mixing and paint application will be emphasized during the workshop.  The structure of this beginner/intermediate class will be that of students painting along with the instructor on a reference provided for their first painting and then students will have the choice of painting from their own reference for the second painting.   This will avoid confusion and allow us to get straight to pushing the paint around.

Whether you are new to oils, or just wanting more experience in alla prima painting techniques, this course will be equally valuable.

      See you there!
